Spock´s Beard "X" (2010)

The Emperor's New Clothes",
"The Man Behind the Curtain" de un progresivo clásico y balada folk que sugieren a música celta.

I declare myself a fervent follower of Spock´s Beard since their origins, and I understand that it´s a band that combines to the perfection sounds oriented to the pop with pure progressive rock, without neglecting the healthy modern style in each of their themes. This new album it´s not ther exception.
Doing a review of ech of their themes, we see that the album begins with "Edge of the In between", showing us a sound that we can catalogue as Genesis old school. A song where its intermingle the unmistakable vocal souds of the band and the guitar solos, going on great themes as "The Emperor´s new clothes".
"Kamikaze" is a scorching song, a progressive theme that remind us to ELP, where there are many changes and alterations, and with the stand out work of Ryo Okumoto on keyboards, principally on the first part of the song.We can also mention "From the Darkness", with no doubts the song that caracterizes the band. They´re almost seventeen minutes long where there is some clasic progressive combined with some fusion.
"The Quiet House", that shows some changes that they aren´t drastic changes of rythm, After the first four minutes keyboard´s itnensity goes gradually down, and comes an interesting voices arrangement ang go on the rest of the song.
"Their Names Escaped Me" one of my favourites on this album, mixes the tranquility of ballad, with a similar sound about Genesis. "The Man behind the Curtain", of a clasic progressive and a folk ballad that remind us tu the Celtic music. And for the last, a long song called "Jaws of Heaven" with sound coming from an acoustic guitar and a voice and a classic piano going on a modern funky and some of fusion.
An interesting album, in the line of its far away album "Spock´s Beard" from 2006 or "Octane" from 2005,
A band that pleasingly give us a work to wich it has us used. Perhaps, I´m not so objective, but we can discuse that Spock´s Beard don´r give us a mediocre work. To who follow them since its origins, or for those who begins to know them, "X" its a great album.

ELOY - Visonary (2009)

One can say that 42 minutes are few minutes, but many of us believes that if we can use every second in the best way, they can leave each thing as we imagine or want. Apparently, these Germans of Eloy, took this omen. After many years of absence, 15 after its last studio record, it return to us to delight with “Visonary”, an EP with 7 songs that take us back to the 70’s, the best stage of Eloy, with records like “ Dawn” (1976), “Silent cries and mighty echoes” (1979) or the fantastic “Ocean” (1977). When we hear this 42 minutes, we have a reminiscence of old vinyl records with the same duration, and put you imaginary on this era.

The present band, has two of its original members, Frank Bornemann, founder member, guitar player and vocalist, Klues-Peter Matziol, bass player, that entrance to training in 1976, with “Dawn” and two new performers, Michael Gerlach y Bodo Schopf keyboard player and drummer respectively. These four musicians, along many guests like Tina Lux y Anke Renner as chorists, a flute player and a guitar player, and a percussionist, give us this beautiful record, innovator, with no doubt, but that take us to the best stage of progressive rock, the 70’s.

This record, begins with “The Refuge” (4:54). The bass and the drums begins this song where the characteristic voice of Frank gives the melody, Vulker Kuinke’s flute, sounds in the background along acoustic and electric arrangements of the guitar in different passages of this song. The next one is “The Secret” (7:45). During the first minute and a half, the bass, the drums and the clear chords of the guitar introduces us to a song where a metalized voice gives a chorus during all the song. The flute returns to stand up and begins with its predominance over the keyboard and synthetizers. It’s a melodic song, easy to hear. The third song “Age of insanity” (7:54) a “hardest” song, have predominance of Michael’s keyboards, predominance always present on Eloy’s songs, giving that typical symphonic sound of the band plus the exquisite voice of Bornemann giving us in the middle of the song a virtuoso solo of its guitar. The main song of the album is “The Challenge” (6:44) that begins with the two oldest members of the band showing us all that they have, Klues with its bass and Frank with its chords, and once again the keyboard has the most important part along all the song but in this case it is emphasized the female chorus on the refrains, a beautiful song that us it leaves predisposed well for the rest of the record. The fifth song is “Summernight Symphony” (4:22), a short song as a ballad, in melodic way , and we can hear it alone, without the rest of the songs of this record. Once again the chorus of Tina and Anke give us the most beautiful song in this record. The next song is the longest “Mistery (the secret part 2)” (9:00), Despite not to be a totally conceptual record, its has some passages that they are, like the melodies the repeats along the seven songs, in this song the record begins to close, beginning this long theme in a melodic way and ending it in a powerful way with the magic of this four musicians at his maximum, expressing this with their instruments, a super powerful bass along the battery and the keyboards with its touch and melodies at the top, in the end of this song . At he end, the seventh song, “Thoughts” (1:22) close this records with an acoustic guitar solo of Frank and its voice ending the record.

Visonary it’s not a record that it’s gonna be in the top ten in this genre in 2009, but sure, for this fans of the genre, it`s gonna take a mark,. It`s one of the European bands with more influence on the symphonic, that gives birth to a beautiful record and give expectation about what are they going to make in the future.

TRANSATLANTIC - The Whirlwind (2009)

IMPERDIBLE!!

Those who loves this genre had to wait eight years to hear together again this four musicians. In 2001, with "Bridge Across Forever", we think that the union of this 4 progressive referring come to his end. We can't imagine a new encounter. Just hearing their two studio albums or their two alive albums we yearn that this happens, but that was like a dream, as each other continues with their projects. Neal Morse (ex Spock's Beard) totally inmersed on his solo projects, Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) on tour with his band and allways participating in some alterntive project, Pete Trewavas, allways effective on Marillion y Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings, Kaipa) allways creating and writing for his swedish band. But with no previous warning and no many comments TRANSATLANTIC meeted again for thier new work "The Whirlwind", a totally conceptual record with the influence of this four musicians in their 77 minutes. It begans with the song that gives name to the record "The Whirlwind". We can hear an ambient sound in its firsts seconds, and them an introduction like an orchestral band. Then the Mellotron of Neal Morse and the battery of Portnoy giving an impressive strenght on the first minutes of the overture.Stolt begins its counterpoints with Trewavas with its unmistakable bass. This gives 10 minutes of Transatlantic in his best musical expresion with the last 3 minutes wiyh Morse and Stolt singing together.

The record continues with "The wind blew them all away"where Stolt shows once again why is one of the best guitar player on this genre with its chords and with the matchless Morse's voice.

"On the prowl", they're 6 minutes with Trewavas' bass giving the rythmic basis to the song, letting the melody and musical side to Morse's keyboards, with a rather angry song by moments, but with an harmonious and beautiful end.
With the next 3 songs, we are in the central part of this record, particullary with Stolt in "A man can feel" and "Out of the night" with this particular style of Flower Kings, so melodic, with the keyboards giving all the harmony and the guitar and voice of the swedish giving this unique touch that he gives to his songs. This is the reason because we have the doubt if we are hearing "Stardust we are" or "Retropolis" pillar records of The Flower Kings. When "Rose colored glasses" begins we re in "The Whirlwind" world when we hear to Morse.begginig with a beautiful ballad, with a guitar solo of Stolt and ending this 8 minutes with the charasterictic melody of all the production.

If we had to divide thi record in two parts, with "Evermore" its begins the second act. An introducing keyboard, the smooth bits of Portnoy's battery, Trewavas bass giving its melody ald all the voices gives a beautiful melody to this song, like previous Transatlantic records. "Set us free" and "Lay down your life" are like the previous theme, joining great musical virtuosity with beautiful vocal chords that delight us thru the songs.

We continue with "Piece of heaven" a short song, totally musical, that introduces us in the end of this play. Well marked bass, the keyboard playing the fundamental part in this song, Portnoy bitting without stopping, and the chords of Stolt during this 2:17 minutes before the theme "It is really happening?" phrase that its repeats the last 5 minutes of the song with a very smooth battery with the Morse voice rythm that gives an atmospheric sound with its keyboard. If you close your eyes you can appreciate this beautiful song with the wonderful 3 minutes of Stolt's guitar solo ending with the Mellotron giving an impressive strenght to this song.

We are in the 12th song "Dancing with the eternal glory - Whirlwind" an spectacular end for this play with no doubt the best on the genre for this year- Morse's piano and his voice opens this song of 12 minutes, a song that is more close to Spock Bears roots or the american's records as solist. the carachteristic melody of the records is in all this song. the chorus voices, Portnoy's percussion and the counterpoints of Flower King's founder give us a goof end for this spectacular record.

Eight years means nothing, if we had to wait all this time for hearing this play. It's a complete record, with no fissures, and coming from this four stars of the genre. and after having heared "Bridge across forever" y "SMPTE" we couldn't wait much less from them. Who those that loves Dream Theater, Marillion, Flower Kings or Spock Beards, can't not to hear this record where all this four gives all their musical legacy and technic. To me is not just a record. It`s the best and more complete that I heared this year. There's one phrase to define this...IMPERDIBLE!

IQ - Frequency (2009)

10 Puntos.

The world scene of Neoprogressive rock it's alive than ever, due to the production of new bands and of those acclaimed in this genre. In this last case bands as Marillion, Pendragon, and IQ just to say some examples, are still working and they`re editing works with more or less frecuency. "Happiness is the road" from Marillion, or "Pure" from Pendragon, were the last productions of these great british bands during 2008. Along IQ these bands were in 80's England the seed that allowed the rebirth of this genre, that it was invaded in late 70s and early 80s with Punk and New Wave.
And precisely IQ is our band for this comment. This great band that birth in the 80s, with 25 years on the road give us another outstanding work, with no doubt, it was the most eagerly awaited in this 2009, and it will had a favourable impact in this so valid Movement.
Without the extraordinary direction of Martin Orford (former keyboard), this cd had the presence of their new drummer Andy Edwards (former Robert Plant band), and a great work in keyboards of Mark Westworth (former Darwin's Radio and Grey Lady Down), And the rest of the band: the voice of Peter Nichols, the guitars of Michael Holmes, and the bass of John Jowitt, who offers a superb, impeccable work.
Clean music, well executed, elegant, with an outstanding technical production, that didn't have mistakes. IQ shows his well known job to make excellent music that delight to their fans. (It's convenient to recall that in 2008, this group recorded a double alive album with some melodies and demos, in a limited edition of 1.000 copies and a different cover from the original).
The first song of this album is "Frecuency" (8.29) surprisily, it takes up again, with a brief introduction in sampler, where we can hear the news of the explosion of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima in a row with disonnances that precedes the group's entrance. Pay attention to the chords of the keyboard. It's remits us to "In the court of Crimson King" from King Crimson, with a powerful dark passage that take us to the arpeggios of Holmes’ electric guitar and to the mellotron, going to changes and counterpoints in the rhythmic session, with a clear introduction to the Fusion. This melody ends with a synthesizer, dissonances, and electric guitar. We must say that the structure of this song is perfect.
"Life support" (10.32), is a well traced line going to Genesis, from the beginning, including the voice. Is a well marked influence, and the great voice of Nicholls take us to great quality passages. W continue with a rythm's change with excellent deployment of Edwards on drums, and the long Holmes' scale in the guitar, that preludes to "One fatal mistake" (4.54). Here we have a beautiful ballad that proposes the intimate essence of the group: vocal magnificence, great work in piano and Hammond, and support with the acoustic guitar of Holmes. I think, this song is one of the bests of this album.
We take up again the road with "Ryker skies" (9.45), a song well elaborated in wich a brief prelude that goes into the electric guitar of Holmes and Nicholls' voice, gives entrance to the rest of the group developing a great versatility. For a moment, this voice transmits dramatism, giving a guideline to a change where the Mellotron plays very suggestive paper, giving us sounds like chorus voices, thet continues with the acoustic guitar and the voice. It emphazises Edwards' work in the battery.
"The Province" (13.43),it`s with no doubt, the best song of this work. This suite characterizes with continuos melodic changes, and begins with a brief prelude of acoustic guitar chords and mellotron, and with the incorporation of Nicholls for a light rock, that continues with an acoustic rest, then the mellotron appearing as chorus with the piano and the electric guitar. Almost appears Hammond's sound and continues the mellotron. In the end of this song we can hear extraordinary arpeggios with the electric guitar.
In the end we have "Closer" (8:11). An acoustic guitar prelude, with mellotron, where we have a reprise of piano chords of track 4. A great vocal work of Nicholls and the acoustic guitar, introduces us to a magnifying keyboard that introduces to all the group in the end.
There were almost 5 years since "Dark Matter", their previous record, With this work, this quintet reinvindicate for good the Neoprogressive, as a movement of commendable artistic qualities, excellent lirycs, and, above all, excellent musicians.
In the last let me highlight the work of their new keyboarder, Mark Westworth, and give them an EXCELLENT to this impeccable record.
10 points.

DREAM THEATER - "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" - 2009

Siguiendo, nos regalan The Shattered Fortress (12.49) Quinta y última parte de la saga iniciada con The Glass Prison, del disco “Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence” , continuada por: This Dying Soul (“Train Of Thought”), The Root Of All Evil (“Octavarium”) y Repentance (de “Systematic Chaos”).
Altamente recomendado.

(Translation by Vivi Di Franco) - We can't denay that Dream Theater's boys always fusionated different musical styles on their music.Principally, the sounds of the golden age in traditional progressive rock of the early 70's, in one way, and in the other way structures and shapes directly attached with classic heavy metal. Also a melodic touch, wich made them more accesible than other similar bands.Every new record is a real surprise, something different, but without losing their identity as a group, making always a chance on his disrupted musical evolution."Black Cluds and Silver Linings" is their 10th record, of 75 minutes long, 6 tracks (in its simple edition, because they've also edited a triple record with covers, and another one with the content of the original record without the vocals, and anotherde luxe edition, with 4 cds and a dvd), with complex musical passages and multirhythms, with a generous dosis of harmony and musical melody. This album have the nature of its first records, like "Images and Words" and "Awake" and also had the strong and forcefully of "Systematic Chaos" and "Train of Thought". But basically, the escence of this record is the melody. The voice of James Le Brie, the guitars of John Petrucci, the keyboards of Jordan Rudess, all the percussion kit of Mike Portnoy and the bass of John Myung, reinforce and enhance the melody. They are also overpowering solos, but this are not the central part of the songs, the key is the melody and the musical harmony. In "Black Clouds and Silver Linings", the group drinks of all its musical influences, external and of their own. Sometimes is heavy, sometimes calmed, atmospheric, modern, melodic, classic, epic, and allways technic, very technical.Despite of its many variety, never loses its own soul, from its beginning to its end. From the beginning this record surprise ourselves, with the heaviest riff and death metal elements of "A Nightmare to Remember" (16:10). A great song where the shades given from the beginning, give shape to all the record. Then, we found "A Rite of Passage" (8:36), first single on this record, that includes a video. Its might be part of "Train of Thought" (its heaviest record), or of "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" (its more experimental record). A good song thats no overhangs from the rest but, well done. The more "doom" atmospheres, more climatic ones, are in the next track "Wither" (5:25). This song would overcome a single, It's a ballad that enhances the more melancholicregisters of Le Brie voice, and its also remember the beautiful "Vacant" of "Train of Thought".In the next song, they give us "The Shattered Fortress" (12:49) the 5th and last part of the saga begined with "The Glass Prision" from "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence", that continues with "This Dying Soul" (train of Thought), "The Root of All Evil" (Octavarium), and "Repentance" (Systematic Chaos). This conceptual obra, distributed in five records, was written by Portnoy, and talk about its alcoholic addiction. A hard song that remember us bands as Metallica or Megadeth.A good song, very severe. Its follows a brilliant song written by Portnoy, called "The Best of Times" (13:09), dedicated to its father, died in 2008. In this song they have the exquisit violin of Jerry Goodman(from Mahavishnu Orchestra). A beautiful song, with emotive climates, dynamic changing elements, and a great and emotional solo from Petrucci, to give a great end to this song. And the "strawberry of the cake" is "The Count of Tuscany" (19:16). Almost 20 minutes of musical excellence. With atmospherical passages, agressive parts, changes of rhythm, incredible melodies.wonderfull solos...this song has the word "Progressive" in every note, given the end to this excellent album.Personally, I consider this the most round up of the trilogy that borns in "Octavarium" and continues with "Systematic Chaos"..."Black Clouds and Silver Lining" counts with an amalgam ans unification of developed concepts in previous records of the band, with very elaborated melodies: more direct, less experimental. If you let me give this record a personal clasification, i give it 9/10.Highly recomended.
